Flameproofing Services for Stage Draperies

Stage draperies represent a large volume of combustible materials. The integrity of the flame retardant forms an important part of a buildings fire safety system. On a stage, electrical sparks, proximity to hot lights, unsupervised spaces, and pyrotechnics – all increase the risk profile unlike any other space. That's why flame retardant compliance for stage draperies is mandatory, drapes require on-going inspection, and are typically subject to renewal every 3 years depending on your local fire code.

On-Site Drapery Cleaners has been providing flame retardant application, testing, and certification for stage draperies since 1978. We are the experts in on-site, same day drapery cleaning and flameproofing. We work around your schedule, and when we leave, you not only have the documentation you require, but also have piece of mind that your facility is safe.

What the Fire Code Requires

Both the International Fire Code (IFC 807) and NFPA 101 (10.3.1) use NFPA 701 as the test standard for curtains, drapes, and scenery. Your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) determines which code applies - and in some cases, both do at the same time.

In Canada a different test standard is referenced, CAN/ULC S-109. This test is procedurally different that NFPA 701. Several provinces also require NFPA 705 testing be conducted “as often as required” to maintain on-going certification.

Compliance isn't one-time. The IFC and NFPA 101 both require ongoing maintenance - treatments must retain effectiveness under actual service conditions. Industry standard is re-testing and re-treatment every three years for topically treated (FR) drapes. As tests are only valid on the day the are conducted, field testing with NFPA 705 is required annually. Fire inspectors are increasingly checking for both.

IFR vs. FR Draperies

There are two types of flame retardant for stage draperies, and they have different maintenance requirements.

FR (Flame Resistant) drapes are made from natural fibers like cotton and treated topically with flame retardant at the mill or in the field. The FR coating wears off over time - through humidity, cleaning, use and the accumulation of dust. FR drapes require cleaning and re-treatment approximately every three years to stay in compliance. Any cleaning method using liquids (laundry, dry cleaning or steam cleaning) will remove the flame retardant coatings. The only method of cleaning which does not remove the flame retardant coatings is non-immersion cleaning.

IFR (Inherently Flame Retardant) drapes are made from synthetic material with flame retardant chemicals woven into the yarn itself. The flame retardant does not typically wash out - but dust accumulation will overwhelm their flame retardant properties, because dust is highly flammable. IFR drapes require professional cleaning every three years to remove combustible buildup. Unless they are really old, IFR drapes typically do not require re-treatment after cleaning.

Why Stage Draperies Lose Their Flame Retardancy

Flame retardant on stage drapes wears off over time because stage drapes face a set of conditions that steadily degrade FR protection:

Dust is the most immediate problem. Stage drapes act as giant air filters, collecting airborne particles from rigging, lighting equipment, and audiences. Dust is combustible. It accumulates invisibly, and a drape loaded with dust can fail a field test if they are not properly cleaning and FR treated.

Moisture is the other major factor. Humidity - from the building's environment or from cleaning - leaches mineral-based FR compounds out of the fabric. Dry cleaning solvents, water and steam both accelerate this. A drape that was treated three years ago that was steamed or dry-cleaned since will likely have no measurable flame retardancy remaining.

Heat and UV exposure from stage lighting also change fabric composition over time, degrading both the IFR fibers and any topical FR treatment.

Frayed, ripped or unsewn fabrics expose loose fibers that ignite more readily and burn faster than intact materials.

Because these factors are ongoing and invisible, a drape that passed inspection last season may not pass today.

Our Flameproofing Process

On-Site provides the full compliance cycle for stage draperies - cleaning, re-treatment, testing, and certification - in a single visit.

Non-immersion cleaning first. Flame retardant manufacturer’s specifications say that before re-treating, drapes must be clean as dirt, oil and residues prevent the flame retardant from securely bonding to the fibres. On-Site uses a proprietary non-immersion process that removes combustible dust from the fabric surface without saturating the fibers. This matters because standard washing, dry-cleaning, and steam cleaning all physically remove topical FR treatments. Our process is the only cleaning method that does not remove the existing flame retardant. Learn how the process works.

Flame retardant application. We apply mineral-based FR compounds - no VOCs, no PCBs, no hazardous residue. The chemistry of flame retardants creates a non-combustive barrier that prevents flame from reaching the underlying fabric fibers.

NFPA 705 field testing. We test treat fabric on-site per NFPA 705 to confirm FR effectiveness before we leave. You're not waiting on a lab result - you know your drapes pass before the job is done.

Certificate of Flame Retardant Application and Testing. You receive full documentation: the test standard applied, the product used, the date of treatment, and the technician. This is the record your Fire Inspector is looking for.

Theatres and Schools We Serve

We work with performing arts centers, school auditoriums, university theatres, black box stages, houses of worship, and event venues across North America. Stage drape projects range from a single-auditorium school to multi-venue performing arts campuses. Our mobile service units come to you - no sending drapes off-site, no production downtime.

Get Your Stage Draperies Certified

If your FR certificates are more than three years old - or if your drapes have been dry-cleaned, washed or steam-cleaned since the last treatment - you're likely out of compliance. Not sure? See our checklist. Don't wait to find out from your fire inspector.
